A bee on a flower in our garden

I read in this week’s Blackmore Vale (our local magazine) that for over 100 years an organisation known as the Elizabeth Finn Trust has helped families who’ve fallen on hard times. Well done them.

But the thing that caught my eye about the story was that the trust used to be known by another name — the Distressed Gentlefolk’s Aid Association.

How quaint.

    I used to remember the advertisements for the Distressed Gentlefolk's Aid Association--clearly not a charity for the riff raff. Even in poverty and old age class distinctions matter. Vicarage Gate, Kensington, was the address on their adverts. Help them grow old with dignity.

    I have written an autobiography published by www.nospine.com which mentions my working at the DGAA in 1959 when I was first in England and how a member of staff brought extra sandwiches in to me when I could only afford a tuppenny bun. The book if anyone is interested is Hamburgers & Ice Cream by Beryl M Ford.
