   i grew up on a farm with chickens. we used to get this great catalog for ordering chicks. it had pictures and i used to be fascinated with the vast array of different breeds that you could get. i think my favorite was the lakenvelder: http://www.dianejacky.com/Poultry_Archives/Poultry.D.L/images/Lakenvelder.jpg

   there were also some neat breeds where the roosters had big puffy feather afros but i can't remember what they were called. kind of like your silkies but much more extreme.

   Ooh, we never got a catalog, mum and dad just used to go along to a bird auction and see what there was... I wonder if they do catalogs in the UK?

   On that site you linked to the artist is billed as the "World's most widely recognized living artist of pigeon and poultry standards."

   That makes me laugh :op

   Those Lakenvelders look like the chickens that always appear in children's farm stories.

   ah. i didn't even think to look at the rest of the site. just did a google image search for lakenvelders.

   the Murray McMurray catalog that she paints for is exactly the one i was thinking of: http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/

   according to their FAQ, they may or may not be able to ship to the UK depending on various regulations. you could probably at least request a free catalog.

    I live just outside of Fairbanks Alaska. My partner and I have 12 laying hens, reds & buffs. One handsome buff rooster ! I have never been around chickens but this has been a blast. They love to follow us around the yard.
    I have enjoyed your pictures.I'd love to raise some silkies.
