England 5 Portugal 6

24th June 2004, mid-afternoon | Comments (45)

I was IMing with Jeremy when he mentioned that the quarter finals of the European Football Championships was on TV: England vs. Portugal. A flick of the wrist and his iSight was pointed at the telly, where it showed me England equalise in extra time, then, in traditional fashion, lose yet another championship penalty shoot-out (much to Jeremy’s delight).

Bastard Portuguese.

You would have to bring that up, wouldn't you?! And you're not even in the country!

Lol, Portugal deserved that game, fair-square.

That is REALLY funny. Not that England lost mind you, just the pics. My coworker, Christian, is pretty much in the same shape as you, Dunstan -- I feel for ya man, I really do. Penalties again, eh? Bummer.

So why wasn't Jeremy supporting the Irish team? Oh that's right, they were not even good enough to qualify for the tournament. 8o)

If I had known, Dunstan, I would have invited you to join me down the Chieftain pub in San Francisco. Despite the result the atmosphere was fantastic.

Can I join this society? Great expression in the second-last picture by the way, Jeremy ;)

Dunstan, I think the best bit was when the Portugese goalie stopped one of his team-mates from going for the last penalty, and pretty much said "this one's mine".

    And he scored.

    BEATEN BY A GOALIE :)

Portugal has been very lucky this year. If anything they should have dropped out a long time ago ... if you ask me. I would rather see England v. France final than Portugal v. Greece ... a shame that's all I can say.

We didn't play well, but we still deserved to win, that goal was fine, we won in the 90 minutes.

Another sorry chapter and dodgy referee's decision puts us out again. We're overdue for some of these to go our way.

Good luck to Portugal, but I don't think they'll win the tournament.

Love the facial expressions too, brilliant.

I didn't see the match (was busy playing Munchkin) but man it seemed tense and exciting! I watched the highlights late last night and I must say, the Portuguese really faught for a victory, imo.
And Beckham... well, the ball DID roll a little bit just before he kicked that penalty. Shows he doesn't know how to put a ball down properly, if you ask me.

Ahwell. I'm waiting for the big match of tomorrow... yeap, Dutch reader here. :)

You gravely mistaken. The final will be Denmark vs. Sweden. Now there'll be a match worth watching, at least for us nordic folk.

I really loved the facial expressions, especially right after the goalie scored. I'm amazed you had the "sense" to take a screenshot there. It was an amazing match, and definitely one of the more enjoyable so far in the tournament.

Here's hoping for more great games, from someone who'll be glued to the screen for France-Greece tonight.

Lee, just check the stats. Portugal completely dominated the game. And don't forget we also had a goal kinda of anulled. let's not forget who was one goal behind in the end of the first part. Both teams were brilliant and it was a spectacular game. I bet England vs France wouldn't have given even half of the emotion this game had.

Better luck next time for you guys :P

    Great post Duncan :)

    ...

Yeah. Right. I hope it will end up in a last minute 2-2 tie, and then, just a second before the penalty shoout-out, all the players on the pitch will die simultaneously for unknown cause, so that there will be no winner to celebrate... and thou shall know the power of the Doom of Trapattoni... bwuahhahhah...

    ...

Ok. I know. You deserved to go trough, and Italy can only blame itself for not being good enough. But it will take till 2008 for me to stop ranting when I see the word Sweden and Denmark togheter... please excuse me :-)

Sol Campbells' gol was disallowed because in Old Europe (outside U.K.) goalkeeper is saint - you can't touch him. It's not a matter of different rules, just different approach/style in judging. It definately wasn't refree's mistake.
