Poppy has puppies

14th January 2005, late afternoon | Comments (38)

Poppy had puppies

Yesterday morning, forty-nine days after going to the dog, Poppy started pupping, and by early evening she’d produced five of the little buggers, three girls and two boys.

Here are a few shots I got as the action was under way:

I’ll post more photos of them in the coming weeks, but right now we’re leaving them be.

Oooohhh, sure. Go quiet for two months, and when you come back, do you have any earth-shattering reasons for your absence? Do you provide us with any blazing new insights into web design?

No. We get pictures of puppies.

    Damned cute puppies.

Yes, I'm afraid that writing, the new job, getting sick, Christmas, moving, not having web access, moving again, The Girlfriend visiting, getting sick again, and a host of other things has rather meant that I haven't had time for any blog stuff of late.

I do have a couple of 4/5ths finished posts, and ideas for lots of new ones, but they'll have to wait a wee while yet. For now all you get is puppies.

    Damned cute puppies.

The puppies look like little, non-evil rats :)

What are your plans for them?

Dunstan's back! Such excitement made me lose my concentration, so I just drank undiluted squash. Can't think of a more appropriate come back than those cute puppies though, reasserting your position as one of the most revered, respected designers on the web. You go!

Sorry to hear you got sick? Are you better now?

We think: Squeak (girl), Dotty (girl), Lotty (girl), Patch (boy), and Scrap (boy).

All named after their behavior and appearance in the first 24 hours...

    Damn cute little puppies.

How long did the birth process take?

Wait till they get a month old...then you'll probably have your hands full!

Dude that is absolutely awesome! Number two plopping out like that. Congratulations.

I have just three questions: are puppies easy to care for, how is Apple, and what's Mr Steve J like?

Looks like someone forgot to drown something.

I may be biased, but I reckon a kitten could have one of them any day.

What a cute photo at the top! Where did Poppy give birth? At home, or was she at a vet's?

  23. Grant Palin:

Did Poppy do everything herself, or was there human assistance...cleaning the puppies or such? Just asking, since I don't know how it's done with dogs...

I, too, was wondering about this.

The only time I've ever seen a puppy being born was when I saw 101 Dalmatians. Sad, I know.

Is it just me or were those more graphic than expected?

Puppy picture takers generally leave out the severing of the umbilical cord and the half exuded puppy.

Although, I must admit, I would absolutely love to see the look on some teenage girl's face as she checks this one out at the calendar kiosk...

    Glad you're back, Dunstan.

I guess she started giving birth at about 0940, and finished at about 1730, so it took her just under eight hours to have all five.

There was a long, long gap between number four and number five though, we thought she might have finished, but she still had another one in there.

I guess we'll be giving them away when they're old enough. Mum and Dad don't want any more dogs, they just wanted Poppy to experience having pups of her own, and she was getting on a bit (in fact, I believe this was her last chance the vet said).

We'll make sure they all go to good homes :o)

"I have just three questions: are puppies easy to care for, how is Apple, and what's Mr Steve J like?'

    (1) At this stage, very easy - you just keep them warm and let the mum look after them. Later on... well, I'm sure they'll be a real handful :o)

    (2) Apple is fabulous, thank you.

    (3) I don't know, I haven't met him, but I expect he's a very nice man.

Poppy gave birth at home, in the cage you can see in the photos. Mum helped pull the puppies out out when needed (a couple were the wrong way round), and cleared the much away from their faces, but on the whole Poppy did everything herself (and would have managed fine on her own I'm sure, but why take a chance when it's so easy to help?)

She didn't quite know how to cut the cord on the first one, but as you can see from the second photo she finally got the idea and chewed it off.

She also ate the placenta of the second puppy. We didn't let her eat any of the others because it's not always good for them apparently, but she gobbled that one down before we could take it away.

A few days into things and she's still doing very well (in fact she just walked in to see me), and the puppies are getting nice and fat.

A little humour on my part as I didn't think you'd have managed to meet him (yet). I'd probably be quite happy as a Mac Genius working at the Apple store in London. I wish your puppies well. May they chew your sofa arms and drool on your Armani suit trouser legs :-P

Ooh, is that a US dictionary checker? I like. Could I inquire as to what you are using?

    very cute puppies dunstan.
when i was a kid we my dog jessica had a couple of litters of golden retrievers. i thought the time when we had to say goodbye to the puppies when people came to purchase them would be very hard but in fact it is very easy as you can see how happy the puppies make their new owners. selling the puppies is generally a stress free and positive experience.

Beautiful! How wonderful that you were able to capture Poppy's cutting of the cord for herself.

Sorry you were sick repeatedly. How stressful and exhausting.

You mentioned it was Poppy's last chance for puppies...Is that because of her age? How old is she?

I guess she was doing everything just from maternal instinct, since you mentioned it was her first experience with puppies, and that she did most everything herself. How nice that your parents wanted her to have that experience.

And nice photos! I really must figure out how to do that sort of presentation on my blog!

Poppy? My dog's name was Poppy! She was a labrador retriever, and she had three litters just like this. She died last month, but I only have to think of all the pups and grandpups she had to realize how much life she brought into the world... in any case, I've seen about 8 litters of pups in my day (my mom's a labrador breeder) and I know it's just about the greatest thing in the world. Have fun!
