Who and where

I don’t have time to write a fancy piece explaining the hows and the whys and the do-you-mind-if-I-don’ts, so I’ll just point out that I’ve added two new dynamic features to the blog: A list of all the people mentioned in this blog, and a list of all the domain names linked to in this blog.

You can access both from within the archive pages, using the ‘Meta searches’ menu options.

For some examples of the people thing at its best, see searches on my Mum, my Grandad, and The Big Man.

I’ll try and produce a full write up on this at a later date. In the meantime, any comments or suggestions would be gratefully received.

    not really a comment on the meta search pages themselves, but i notice that, with the latest version of opera [win xp], your 'enhanced tooltips' code works perfectly on these two pages, but doesn't work [and has never worked] on any of your other pages. what's different?

    Well it does work on those pages but not "perfectly". The "enhanced tooltip" appears which is then overlapped by Opera's own tooltip. So it's not very elegant, at least in Opera 7.

    Awesome. I was actually planning to add a similar feature to my own blog (like all entries related to "Sarah", for instance).

    I'm wondering exactly how you approached it (which I assume you mean to talk about in the write up you mentioned). I envisioned a place in the administrator interface where you would put down names of people (and aliases for them) that the code would search for in entries. That or, when I implement searches, have pages with a permanent search query that would go through the index for these names.

    This also reminds me of a website with a section called "Connections". It was fascinating. Harpers.org, that's where it was. Check that out, it's a really nifty thing (you could probably explore it for a couple of hours).

    Ken, that's very good!

    My 'people' list is made possible because I use custom tags around each person's name, (otherwise there's nothing that identifies a person as a person) but otherwise works on the same principal I guess.

    Good to know there's an MT plugin though, I think these are handy lists to have :o)
